“I FOUND OUT ABOUT SPACE AND CAREERS THAT COULD BE INVOLVED IN IT”

Space Camp 2018 Graduate

Royal Air Force Space Camp

Royal Air Force Space Camp is an exclusive residential experience for children in year 8 and year 9 interested in STEM subjects. The camp will be run by leading UK education providers hi-impact consultancy on behalf of the Royal Air Force as part of their youth STEM engagement programme.

Working in teams across the week, each will work towards its own balloon launch and retrieval, involving predictions, payload build, helium research and footage film shows. In addition, there will be specialist workshops throughout the week from the Royal Air Force STEM Ambassadors, Astronomers, Scuba instructors and hi-impact’s own STEM delivery team.

Space Camp will be fully manned by hi-impact’s chaperone staff who all have enhanced DBS and CRB certificates, are safeguarding trained and are all highly experienced in working with young people of all ages.

I LEARNT about our solar system and LOVED MIXING WITH OTHER PEOPLE DURING THE WEEK!

Space Camp 2018 Graduate

Space Camp cadets work in small groups throughout the week, meeting challenges and building new friendships that we hope will last beyond the camp itself. Each group will have hi-impact team leaders through the week to guide them through the activities and challenges as well as providing support with any issues faced.

Over the week children will have access to the fantastic on-site facilities. As well as the classrooms workshops we will be making use of all-weather sports pitches, the fantastic grounds and IT suites. As part of the activities planned throughout the week, Space Camp Cadets will be training like Astronauts including a very special Scuba Diving session in the swimming pool which simulates the effects of weightlessness experienced in Space!

All meals at Space Camp will be provided, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and evening snacks. Dinner will always include hot and cold choices, a full salad bar and a range of healthy options. Snacks and fruit will also be available through the day. We can cater for a range of diets so just make us aware of any dietary requirements when requested.

Accommodation will be in shared rooms in two purpose built blocks. One is for boys and one for girls. All have full facilities including common rooms for relaxation and socialising in the evening. hi-impact staff also share the residential accommodation and will be on call every night. There is an excellent Medical Centre manned every morning and a 24 hour security system to ensure young people are safe at all times. There will also be numerous first aid trained individuals on the site.

The highlight of the week will be the launch of High Altitude Balloons to the edge of Space! Hi-impact Consultancy have led the field in providing this particular opportunity for young people since 2011, having a proven history in delivering creative and meaningful STEM workshops supporting the excitement of “Near Space” balloon launches. Alongside the Royal Air Force STEM Ambassador program, this is the perfect high-profile activity around which to base our workshops throughout the week.

The Space Camp experience is fully funded by the Royal Air Force Youth Engagement programme. Applications can be made closer to the date of the next camp and if you are lucky enough to be accepted, you will be sent an information pack with everything you need to know. For the event itself, parents or carers will need to bring children to the venue at the start of the week and collect again at the end. When you arrive, there will be a meeting for parents wishing to hear more about the week’s plans, as well as being given the opportunity to ask questions. There will also be an exciting Graduation Ceremony on the Friday morning to which parents or carers will be invited to attend.
